The National Day of the People's Republic of China is celebrated on October 1 to mark the formation of the People’s Republic of China which is also celebrated by China’s two special administrative regions (SAR): Hong Kong and Macau.

This special event has been originated in 1949 from the Memorial Day for the founding of the People’s Republic of China. In this year, October 1, there was the grand ceremony held at Tiananmen Square to celebrate the new formation of the Central People’s Government and the following day the new government declared that October 1 to be the National Day even though PRC was actually founded on September 21 in 1949 instead of October1.

The National Day is grandly celebrated nationwide with a variety festivities and the festivities traditionally begin with the ceremonial raising of the Chinese national flag which are followed by one of the most popular event, military review & parade held at Tiananmen Square where would be decorated in a festive theme and be displayed with portraits of renowned leaders. These festivities conclude with the evening celebrations, which are fireworks and concerts.

Since 1999, this occasion has been expanded the celebrations by several days and now this period is considered as "Golden Week” which is the longest public holiday in China besides the Spring Festival holiday. During this period a number of Chinese people go traveling all over the country to enjoy beautiful autumn season.
