The famous annual Festival Interceltique de Lorient, in Brittany is about to take place! If you are interested in Brittany, or in any Celtic related country or activity, this event is for you! Especially if you are a fan of music! The Festival Interceltique de Lorient is a real live-window open on the world.
Starting on August 5th, fantastic performances and events will be offered to the public in Lorient for 10 days: on the streets, on the stage, on the sea, on air, in the restaurants and cafes, and in a very joyful and festive atmosphere where 750,000 people will gather to celebrate the Celtic culture!
The Festival covers all styles of music issued by Celtic Nations (from ancient and classical songs; folk; rock; jazz; symphonic orchestra… to very actual songs). And of course, the Festival is not limited to music but presents other kinds of performances, exhibitions or events such as (traditional) dance; history, literature; arts; cinema; lute-making and much more…

The Festival Interceltique de Lorient is a real live-window open on the world.

This festival is a must-see in the Lorient country, and a memory of a Breton weekend that will last for a lifetime.

Focus on Australia

Every year, the Lorient Interceltic Festival honors a foreign nation. This year, it's Australia, a country that was already chosen 10 years ago for the 1st time.
Australia will present special events and activities including folk groups, traditional dance, pipe-bands, harpists, and didgeridoo players… Many artists will come to perform on stage like the Australian musician Archibald William "Archie" Roach, (born 8 January 1956, Mooroopna). As a singer, songwriter and guitarist, he survived a turbulent upbringing to develop into a powerful voice for Indigenous Australians, a storyteller in the tradition of his ancestors, and a nationally popular and respected artist.  You can find the details of the artists here with ClaymoreGraham Dodsworth, Sylvestre Soleil.
In the manner of the 2016 July 14th big Parade in Paris for which Australian and New Zealander soldiers joined the French Army contingent, Australia was the guest of honor on the occasion of the celebration of the centenary of the Somme Battle.

Who are the Celtic nations?
Celtics were once the most powerful people in Europe. In France, Brittany is undoubtedly the most Celtic region. People are very attached to their ‘Breton’ identity and the ‘Brezhoneg’, the local language is now gaining more popularity, likewise the customs and traditions.

Scottish dancers

Scots are famous for their kilts, whiskey; tree trunks throw competitions, Loch Ness monster and breath-taking landscapes… Scottish people always knew how to cultivate their precious resources and heritage. The country’s whole identity is brought together with the Celtic culture and is more dynamic there than anywhere else.

Located in North-West Spain, between Portugal and Asturias, with Saint-Jacques de Compostelle as a capital city and 3 millions inhabitants.  Galicia is sometimes associated to the ‘Spanish Finistère’.

The Isle of Man
Located in Ireland Sea, the Isle of Man counts 60 000 inhabitants on its 570 km surface. The language spoken there is the Manx, closely related to Irish and Scottish Gaelic. The symbol of the island is a triskelion (how strange, like in Brittany), called the ‘Three legs of Man”.

Ireland is mostly famous for the huge celebration of St Patrick, seen there as the symbolic Patron. Gaelic is learned by 1 million students and spoken by 200,000 Irish people. Music holds a very important place in Ireland: U2; Sinead O’Connor, The Cranberries; Enya; The Corrs…

Wales is a region located in West Great Britain with 3 millions inhabitants, and Cardiff as a capital city. Welsh are fighting for the survival of The Gaelic language.

This region of Spain is located in North–West Spain with Oviedo as capital city and around 1 million inhabitants. The region has become more dynamic for the last 30 years and worked at the spread of the local language. Today 30,000 people study the Asturian language.

Cornwall is located in extreme South West of England with Truro as a Capital city. It is a beautiful area where musical heritage has been gaining popularity over the last decades.
Further in the world
The Celtic diaspora is a worldwide network in which pride, exchange and creativity serve the cosmopolitan contemporary Celtic culture. You may see people playing bagpipes in Argentina, Acadia (Canada), Cuba, Mexico and even in Australia, where 50% of the population have Celtic origins! *
