As the weather cools down, Hong Kong welcomes another edition of the annual Wine and Dine Festival. Taking place next to the dazzling lights and sights of Victoria Harbour, the Wine and Dine Festival is a four-day event which brings together world-class food, wine and spirits as well as entertainment. From the quintessential glass of ruby red to liquors from Georgia, the event welcomes tens of thousands of visitors at home and from abroad. 2017 is also the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. In commemoration of this important date, the festival offers 20 “hotspots” to visitors. From tasting rooms, electronic sparkling fountain, selfie hotspots to craft beer zone, be prepared to spend a few hours here. TV5MONDE Asie Pacifique was there and here are some of our selected highlights.

The first challenge was to decide where to start first, as zones are mapped out across the entire venue, showcasing wines, spirits, beer, liquor and more from all around the world. It was almost impossible to visit every zone as one is often stopped by the sights and smells along the way.

Our first sight of the venue showed a variety of booths and a sea of people against the glamourous backdrop of lights, a signature of Hong Kong's renowned Victoria Harbour.

The event's success lies in its use of "tokens", which are exchanged for drinks or food across the venue. Visitors often start with a "classic wine pass light", which offers 5 tokens redeemable for drinks or food items. With wines from France, Spain, the United States and Australia, as well as bubbly liquor, cocktail bars, craft beer, whisky and sake, the festival is a great place for connoisseurs and strictly social drinkers alike.

One booth which caught our eye in particular is Le Vin Mignon, a wine distributor which has partnered with Château Berthenon in Blaye, Bordeaux. Its Sanrio series offers a myriad of red, white and rosé wines, with iconic Japanese cartoon characters such as Hello Kitty and My Melody representing a different flavour or make. There was also a Hello Kitty photo booth where visitors lined up to take selfies or snap a shot.

For those with a palette for finer, more exquisite wines, a visit to the festival's Grand Wine Pavilion is a must. We were invited for a visit inside by the Burgundy Wine Company, who specializes in wines from the region of Burgundy, France. Their team took to great lengths to explain to visitors the history of wines from the region, the grape variety, its fermentation process and more. We were invited to try some of the region's finest selection. Despite the higher price tags associated to wines shown in the pavilion, a lot of the wines are exclusive batches produced at a very limited volume each year. Wine lovers should make sure to tour the pavilion as part of their visit to the festival.

As the evening winds down, visitors are encouraged to take breaks in the many rest areas - big or small - available at the venue. We found this gem of a green space nearby the Japanese liquor zone, where we relaxed and treated ourselves to open-air, live music performances given by local artists.
If you are in Hong Kong this weekend, the event is not to be missed. Tourists should also take advantage of their bonus visitor pack offer, where entry and 4 drink tokens are offered free to bona fide tourists with a valid piece of travel document.
