With its dense population and tentacular network of buildings, transportation systems and more, Hong Kong is quite possibly the ultimate city of lights. Landmarks such as the Peak or contemporary skyscrapers like the International Finance Centre (IFC) and the International Commerce Centre (ICC) are tourist hotspots for a glimpse of Hong Kong's fascinating landscape of lights and sounds, long before a light festival of international scale made its way to Hong Kong. This year, inspired by Lyon's mega event Fête des Lumières, Hong Kong took to hosting its very first edition based on the concept of "art - light - heritage". In partnership with the French festival, Lumieres Hong Kong (note the global rendition of the name without the diacritic, the French è or accent grave) will make its debut from the 23rd to the 25th of November, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Hong Kong as a Special Administrative Region.
Some of Hong Kong's most famous landmarks will be used as canvasses for various artistic and light installations

The event offers 3 nights of light installations, video projections, art pieces, pop-up's, music and dance performances as well as dining experiences. The majority of the events will be entirely free to the public, with landmark sites and buildings located in the central areas of the city serving as canvasses for some of the best renowed local and international light artists. The festival aims to offer something to everyone, including family-friendly events such as face painting, children painting workshop, circus troops and marching bands.
The former French mission building will also be featured in the event.

So is the Peninsula Hotel, one of the Hong Kong's very first and most iconic luxurious hotel.

Even the underpath at Connaught Road, a popular pathway connecting Hong Kong's financial districts, will be embellished with unique installations.

A notable mention of the festival is that it will be welcoming quite a few French light artists!
  • Benjamin Petit (LTBL) x Salvatore Barletta (Vendredi 4). The Vendredi 4 agency is known for their specialisation in event installations and virtual reality.
  • Christophe Mayer, Artistic Director of Digiplay Studio
  • Julien Nonnon, who'll be jointly hosting Urban Safari with Alliance française Hong Kong on 11/25
  • MAP Office, an architect-artist duo based in Hong Kong since 1996
  • Inook: Moetu Batlle and David Passegand, creators of Anooki, an award-winning multidisciplinary creative company who's taken home the Trophy of Light (voted favourite creation in the festival) in Lyon's 2012 and 2014 Fête des Lumières
  • Stéphane Masson, a videographer who uses moving pictures to re-interpret mundane objects in our daily lives
  • Yves Moreaux, whose works often question viewer's perception, creating a trick-eye effect
