“Un croque, Monsieur!”
‘One croque, Sir!’

Who has never tried a croque-monsieur? In France, it’s a very popular dish enjoyed by everyone. Why? It’s quick and easy to prepare – ingredients are easy to find since it’s only bread, ham, cheese and butter; it’s absolutely scrumptious and it can be enjoyed at any time of the day!

‘Croque’ comes from the verb “croquer’ which means to bite in French.

It seems that the first croque-monsieur appeared at the beginning of the 20th Century in Paris. According to the story, a customer would have asked the brasserie’s chef about the origins of the ham, to which the garcon-de-café answered   “C’est la viande de monsieur” / ‘It's that gentleman’s meat’   pointing at the local butcher. And voilà THE croque-monsieur!

The croque-madame

This is a version of the croque-monsieur, when topped with a poached or fried egg. Is it because the egg looks like a lady’s hat?

Recently: the croque-mademoiselle

This one is lighter than the married couple above... Instead, it contains creamy cheese, chives, cucumber and salad.

So, which ‘croque’ would you vote for? Share with your friends!
