Produce in the spotlight” is the highlight to 2017’s edition of the Fête de la Gastronomie, France’s annual celebration of “community, pleasure and joy”, in the words of the event’s patron, Stéphane Layani. In 2010, the gastronomic meal of France has been immortalized with its inclusion into the UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list. The nationwide event is not just about the actual food we consume, but is about “enjoying good company, eating healthy and building a sense of community”.
Produce is chosen as the theme this year as the Fête aims to showcase the diversity and richness of France’s agriculture and its food industry. To cite an example, French cheese and wine - two staples in the country’s cuisine - come in so many varieties and flavours that they really should be considered a culture on its own. The Fête’s goal is to do just that, to showcase the nation’s gastronomic heritage as a cultural phenomenon via its many events, open-doors, workshops and shows. The event also takes place outside of France, so be sure to check local listings,

10,500 events in the 2016 edition brought along 2.5 million visitors all across France. You name it, the Fête’s got it! Events all across France offer enough choices for the adult connoisseur or the little ones. There are public grape harvests, wine-making workshop, intensive courses on preparing seafood, volunteering in food banks, tastings and tours…and so much more!
