The Gothard railway tunnel in Switzerland was a monumental feat that revolutionised European transport in 1882. While Louis Favre´s design and the technologies used were revolutionary, working and health conditions were inhuman: 300 people suffered accidents and 900 fell ill, paying a high price for trans-Alpine mobility.
